I can't seem to get it running on my Trinket M0 along with the Adafruit.hid Keyboard library. The simple sample code does seem to work just fine. Try removing the extra line (s) of code you added, print GC info and see if it is almost running out of memory.

If the host was not rebooted and disconnected from VC alone with memory allocation issue, then it is the hostd which is not getting enough memory to execute tasks.
